What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.
EMDR Therapy is a psychotherapy approach that has been proven effective for the treatment of trauma – i.e. symptoms and conditions resulting from unresolved distressing life experiences such as violence, natural disaster or childhood trauma.
It uses a structured approach to address past, present and future aspects of disturbing memories. It is an integrative therapy synthesising elements of many traditional psychological orientations as well as current research.

EMDR for Anxiety and Depression
Trauma rarely stays contained to a single memory — it often shows up in daily life as persistent worry, low mood, or a sense of being stuck. Our EMDR therapy for anxiety helps clients process the underlying experiences that keep the nervous system on high alert, so calm feels accessible again rather than out of reach. Similarly, our EMDR therapy for depression addresses the unresolved experiences that can quietly fuel low energy, hopelessness, and disconnection, helping clients move from simply coping to genuinely healing.
What EMDR treats?
- Scientific research has established EMDR as effective for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, clinicians also have reported success using EMDR in treatment of the following conditions:
- Panic Attacks, Complicated Grief, Complex PTSD, Adverse Childhood Traumas,
- Dissociative Disorders, Disturbing Memories
- Phobias, Pain, Performance Anxiety,
- Stress Reduction, Addictions
- Sexual and/or Physical Abuse, Depression
- Body Dysmorphic Disorders, Personality Disorders

Frequently Asked Questions
Is EMDR therapy a one-session cure?
No. EMDR therapy is not a one-session cure. While some people experience relief after a single session, lasting recovery usually requires multiple sessions. Research shows many individuals with PTSD improve significantly within 4–12 sessions, depending on the severity and complexity of their trauma. Those with multiple or childhood-related traumas may need longer treatment and additional preparation to achieve the best outcomes.
Is EMDR therapy an efficacious treatment for PTSD?
EMDR therapy is recognized as an effective trauma treatment and recommended worldwide in the practice guidelines of both domestic and international organizations.
Is EMDR therapy effective in the treatment of phobias, panic disorder, or agoraphobia?
EMDR therapy can be effective for phobias and panic disorder, particularly when symptoms are linked to traumatic or distressing memories. Research shows positive results for some specific phobias, such as dental phobia, and studies have found EMDR can reduce panic attacks as effectively as—or in some cases better than—CBT. However, evidence is mixed, and EMDR may be less effective for phobias without a clear traumatic cause or for complex cases without adequate preparation.
What can I expect with EMDR therapy, ie., what should/could happen?
EMDR therapy follows a structured eight-phase process that includes understanding your history, preparing you for treatment, identifying distressing memories, and processing them using guided eye movements, taps, or sounds. Throughout the sessions, your therapist helps you stay grounded and in control. Over time, distressing memories become less upsetting, and healthier thoughts, emotions, and responses begin to replace them.
How many sessions will it take?
The number of sessions depends upon the specific problem and client history. However, repeated controlled studies have shown that a single trauma can be processed within 3 sessions in 80-90% of the participants. While every disturbing event need not be processed, the amount of therapy will depend upon the complexity of the history. In a controlled study, 80% of multiple civilian trauma victims no longer had PTSD after approximately 6 hours of treatment. A study of combat veterans reported that after 12 sessions 77% no longer had post-traumatic stress disorder.
How do I know EMDR therapy would work for me/work for my anxiety/problems, etc.? Am I a candidate for EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy has been extensively researched as effective for problems based on earlier traumas. In addition, reports from clinicians over the past 25 years have indicated that EMDR therapy can be extremely effective when there are experiential contributors that need to be addressed. Read the book Getting Past Your Past: Take Control of Your Life with Self-Help Techniques from EMDR Therapy by Shapiro and see if any of your problems are covered in the cases. Interview at least 3 clinicians to ask them what experience they have using EMDR with your particular problem.
